Richard Mark Bushong

August 27, 1956 — April 21, 2025

Caneyville, Kentucky

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard Mark Bushong, age 68, of Caneyville, Kentucky, who left us peacefully on April 21, 2025, at his home. Born on August 27, 1956, in Bethesda, Maryland, Richard was the beloved son of the late Jacquelin and Helen (Raines) Bushong.

Richard's warmth and kindness touched the lives of everyone around him. A cherished member of the Saint Mark's Episcopal Church in Boonesboro, MD, he exemplified compassion and generosity, always willing to lend a helping hand or an ear to those in need. His passion for life was evident in his many interests—whether it was blacksmithing, exploring caves, making over 700 parachute jumps, or riding his beloved Harley, Richard truly embraced every moment.

Richard worked for The Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia Law Enforcement agency in Washington D.C. In his twenties, he also volunteered at Landover Hill Fire Department at Prince George’s County, Maryland. As a teenager, he would travel to several states to work on cattle ranches. He retired from Washington Gas where he was a safety trainer.

He was a book of knowledge and enjoyed reading and learning about many different topics.

Richard’s dedication to family was unparalleled. He was an active participant in the Boy Scouts, sharing his knowledge and love for the outdoors with his son. He found joy in the company of his wife, Cheryl, and cherished his role as a father and stepfather to Susan Watson (Michael), Mark Bushong (Christina), Jody Patten (Mike), Jenny Knapp (Jacy), Mindy Smith (David), and Lyle Robertson (Nicoal). Richard was a proud grandfather to two grandchildren, Easton Belle and Wesley August. Also, surviving is his nephew, Charles Bushong (Sarah) and was blessed with a large and loving extended family.

With a rich history that he eagerly shared, Richard was deeply connected to his heritage, tracing roots back to 1825 at the Bushong Farm and Virginia Museum of New Market. He became a proud member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, contributing to numerous projects and serving as a leader and gifted orator in the community.

Left to cherish Richard’s memory, besides his wife Cheryl, are his children, stepchildren, grandchildren, and step-grandchildren. He is also remembered fondly by many friends and relatives, including his brother, Charles Bushong, who preceded him in death.

As we look back on Richard’s extraordinary life, let us remember the kindness, laughter, and love he shared with us all. We take comfort in knowing that we will meet again on that beautiful shore.
